Residential Building Designer

We are seeking a Residential Building Designer who thrives at the intersection of design excellence, client leadership, and technical execution. You will lead projects from the earliest sketch through delivery of construction documents, guiding both clients and our internal teams with creativity, clarity, and precision.

You’ll not only translate design intent into comprehensive documents but also bring ideas to life in real time, using live sketching and trace overlays during client meetings to capture design preferences, test options, and communicate visually on the spot.

As a trusted guide for our clients, you will lead them through the design process with clarity, creativity, and empathy, ensuring their vision is realized with both artistry and technical rigor.

- Design Leadership: Drive design development and ensure the client vision carries through every stage of the project
- Live Sketching: Engage clients directly through quick, schematic sketching and trace overlays in real time, turning conversation into design ideas they can see and respond to immediately
- Client Leadership: Act as a trusted advisor, fostering confidence through clear communication and thoughtful design solutions
- Documentation & Technical Detailing: Produce and oversee high-quality drawings and specifications, ensuring accuracy and adherence to codes
- Project Management: Coordinate schedules, budgets, and deliverables, balancing client needs with firm resources
- Collaboration: Partner with our designers, BIM specialists, estimators, and the build team to refine designs and resolve challenges
- Construction Administration: Provide ongoing support during construction, including site visits & RFIs
- Professional degree in Architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch) preferred, or equivalent design experience
- 6+ years of professional experience, ideally in residential or light commercial design/build projects
- Proficiency in BIM software (Archicad strongly preferred; Revit acceptable with willingness to transition)
- Demonstrated ability to produce complete construction document sets, with strong knowledge of building codes, detailing, and construction methods
- Experience leading client meetings, presentations, and design reviews, with proven ability to mentor staff and coordinate consultants
- Strong freehand sketching ability, including live sketching with clients using trace overlays

- Samples of built work (plans, elevations, sections, details)
- Evidence of projects where you served as lead designer or held primary responsibility for project delivery
- BIM models or digital workflows that showcase technical capability

Project Manager

We are seeking a Project Manager who excels at balancing exceptional craftsmanship, proactive communication, and operational excellence. As the central leader throughout construction, you will guide projects from preconstruction handoff through completion, ensuring every detail is executed with precision, quality, and care. You will serve as the primary point of coordination between clients, trade partners, and internal teams, maintaining clear communication while proactively managing schedules, budgets, and project milestones. More than simply overseeing construction, you will champion the Will Johnson Building Company standard, creating an organized, collaborative, and enjoyable building experience while delivering homes that reflect our commitment to integrity, excellence, and lasting client relationships.

- Three to five years’ experience in residential construction
- Bachelor's degree in related field preferred
- Attention to detail
- Proficiency in reading and understanding blueprints
- Problem solving/analysis & ability to work on a team
- Strong interpersonal relationships with others
- Understanding of residential construction practices, materials, and methods
- Be responsible to know and demonstrate WJBCs core values: Integrity, Excellence, Accountability, Solutions Oriented, and Joy
- Understand and adhere to the WJBC preconstruction, construction and post construction process as outlined on BuilderTrend.
- Contribute to preconstruction client meetings and attend site visits as required.
- Ensure that all pertinent construction details are shared with all teams during the preconstruction process and hand off.
- Ensure that all permits and necessary documents are on the jobsite at all times.
- Proactively schedule subcontractors, production staff, material deliveries, and inspections to meet deadlines
- Collaborate with other departments regularly to overcome obvious or impending production problems and/or delays
- Maintain a clean jobsite at all times by providing designated areas for waste disposal. Ensure that all workers are informed of these guidelines and adhere to them throughout every phase of the project.
- Ensure the jobsite is safe, OSHA ready and the scope of work is appropriate for the persons performing the work
- Communicate daily with the Operations Manager and clients regarding construction progress, building challenges and upcoming events via BuilderTrend Daily Logs.
- Code job invoices in a timely manner adhering to the project budget.
- Work to complete the project punch list within 30 days of client orientation.
- Manage post construction warranty (1 year) and service projects ensuring clients and Operations Manager are updated regularly.
- Attend staff meetings and training as required
- Approve time sheets for Carpentry Crew
