It all started with a simple love for carpentry…
Will Johnson began his work in building as a youth, fresh out of college, working as a carpenter. He immediately fell in love with what was at first a summer job. Little did he know that it was the begining of a 30+ affair of custom building and remodeling.
After years of carpentry work, Will was then brought on board by R.B. Fitch to assist in developing Fearrington. Will’s hard work and dedication to Fearrington not only gave him experience, but the confidence he needed to start his own building company.
In 1995 Will Johnson Building Company was formed.
The foundations of the company were set: honesty, integrity, hard work, being the cornerstones for which to build the business.
The company began with Will working as the president and project manager, and his wife Laurie serving as the book keeper and vice president. Laurie, an Atlanta native, and Georgia Tech graduate, moved to Chapel Hill in 1980.
Many custom and speculative homes were built in the first years of the budding company. As well, some major and minor remodeling projects were undertaken and successfully completed. Will’s love for carpentry and building and his values showed through in the work he was producing.
As the amount of homes being built grew, so did Will’s team. Mike and Juan, two expert painters and carpenters were brought on board in the late 90’s. Their expertise and critical eye for trim work brought an entirely new level of quality to Wjbc homes. Mike and Juan have become and continue to be and integral part of what makes Wjbc homes stand apart.
Ben, Will’s oldest son, soon found his own love for the building industry, as did his wife Rebecca. Ben, being a student of architecture and designer by trade, focused his design abilities on residential homes. He has since drawn and built many homes with Will. Rebecca, Ben’s wife, the icing on the cake, joined and began work as the selections manager and interior designer. Her job was to guide Wjbc clients though the oftentimes daunting process of picking out everything from siding color to door hinge finishes.
The rest of the story is still unfolding today……
